San Diego 2014 The Last Stand of the California Browncoats Newsflesh eBook Mira Grant

The Newsflesh trilogy is one of my favorite zombie reads. If you have yet to read Mira Grant you are really missing out on her fabulous writing and the expertise that she brings to the horror genre due to her knowledge of virology. She’s not only a brilliant writer but she really gets you into the heads of her characters. Making the zombpocalypse all the more horrifying.

In this one Mira Grant gives us the opportunity through interviews and some footage to see the way the apocalypse started in San Diego, and at ComicCon no less. How horrible would it be to feel trapped with thousands of other fans that just want to sell merchandise or even better, get autographs from their favorite heroes? Mira lets us into a sort of behind the scenes look at just how horrible it would be, and it was!

I loved the characters in this one. I felt for each of them like they were my loved ones. Although this story is only just over 100 pages it feels like it is so much more. She has jam packed this story with adventures of many characters in just one tiny place. But I have a feeling these characters are going to stay with me for a long time.

The main character is telling the reader through an interview and at the beginning I was wondering how deep she was going to go but by the end I had tears running down my face! How Mira Grant is able to bring that much passion and character and depth, so much so that I was crying at the end, I do not know but I love her for it.

And she once again added a dog! I remember two books where she added in a dog’s thoughts and this is one of them. I love this portions! Being a dog lover it would be so wonderful to know what my pups are thinking but I think Mira has a special way of looking at this. This particular pup Unis was marvelous and there for her owner. Although the book and all of the characters were great, this small portion of Unis was my favorite.

In short: This one can be read without the others of the Newsflesh Trilogy. There isn’t anything in here about the main characters of those so it is a stand alone but it also goes so well with the others. I love it and I am sure other zombie fans will too. 4

San Diego 2014 The Last Stand of the California Browncoats Newsflesh eBook Mira Grant Reviews

I will admit, I have only read the work by this author written under the name "Mira Grant", but she is one incredibly talented being, and I really MUST check out her other work!

Without fail, she has me staying up late to finish the story, checking around corners for zombies, and crying. Every time.

Be they novellas or novels, she gets to me. I always find myself sitting there afterwards, one great big sobbing mess, but I keep coming back for more.

I think this novella, specifically, spoke to me as a con-goer, and one involved in fandom. While I didn't know her characters specifically (before reading), I know their local counterparts. I felt like I was reading about people I know. In the zombie apocalypse.
This short story takes you to the beginning of the 'Feed' situation, back when the outbreak begins. I like the premise that humankind has stabilized and now confronts infected as part of their normal routine. This book does not expand on that, so I was somewhat disappointed.

However, the book does a good job, showing the start of the outbreak. Several memorable characters still visit my thoughts from time to time. Where I have some problems, is the lack of any involvement of security, police, etc. in the storytelling. I didn't find it believable that there was never an attempt to rescue the survivors. It is stated several times that they were just learning of the extent of the infection. But I believe in the strong characters of the first respond teams, and they would not just have sat around and not entered.
Where do you NOT want to be when the zombie apocalypse starts? How about in a huge convention hall with 25,000 of your soon-to-be very hungry friends? Good grief. And here I was thinking Comic-Con was a nightmare WITHOUT zombies wandering around!

Seriously (?), this is a good story. It's framed by an interview Mahir is conducting with a survivor, which gives it the drama and gravity it might not otherwise have. The author is clearly someone familiar with Comic-Con and fandom, and it works to her advantage here. Overall, this is a strong addition to the Feed universe.

My only gripe about novellas on the is that their length tends to be a little misleading -- the story ends well before you hit 100%, due to previews and other stuff included at the end of the book.
I read this book after reading the Newsflesh series. As a previous reviewer said, references from that series imply what happens in this book. But that doesn't stop it from being an excellent read in its own right.

I love Mira Grant's writing. All of the Newflesh series books are excellent, with great characterization of the characters, lots of action, and enough twists to keep me guessing.

Even though I love hard-science fiction and page turners in general, I found this a very emotional book, also. Because I cared so much about the characters, their fates really affected me. <very minor spoiler and the singing at the end brought me to tears>.

Definitely read the Newsflesh series before this book. Its universe greatly informs this book. It would also be a very good stand-alone book, but your enjoyment will be increased by the backstory in the other books of the series.
