Even the negative reviews admit that the readers just don't like reading about certain subject matter. That's not a critical review. That's an opinion based on a personal preference.

The author creates suspense, mostly by alternating chapters between past and present. Both, however, were exciting plot lines. Only once did I feel the ending of one section was contrived to make the reader want to continue (Hint: "Stephen.").

The character development is excellent. These are not flat characters, stereotypes of how we think people should act. In fact, the relationships change as the book progresses and Helena learns more about her parents. The ambivalent feelings she has for both parents are realistic even if the readers wishes she would act differently than she does.

I have no idea if the flora and fauna descriptions are accurate, but they seem to be. Who cares? They are believable.

The writing style is fluid, almost too fluid for a first-person narration from a young woman whose sense of style comes from old National Geographic magazines. Again, who cares?

Sometimes I purposely drag out reading a book in order to prolong the enjoyment. Not this one. I finished it in two days, unable to delay gratification.

I read this in almost 24 hours.

I really carefully chose this after a long day of searching and I chose it because it didn't seem to have any low scoring stars on and the premise was so interesting.

I read it in one day and it scared the crap out of me.

From Helena's unique perspective - one that I had NEVER considered before - I discovered a few things i didn't know about a human being's capacity to love and be loved.

my only goodreads update was "This is creepy and weird" - that is a compliment. I finished it late into the night and had no one to tell. My jaw was dropped open - welcome to a night of imagination sparked and many odd dreams involving coyotes, wolves and the lonely hunter.
I much anticipated the release of this novel and was not disappointed. An outstanding story, unique in content and delivery. The protagonist's voice is outstanding. Competing tensions build, arising from the protagonist's building backstory as a child as she moved toward understanding the obscene truth about her origin and her backwoods existence, versus the present-day dilemma of the protagonist as an adult, needing to track her murderous father who's escaped from prison into the same wild they'd both lived in as family, a father who shows every intention of wanting to again ruin the protagonist's life now that she's an adult with a family. Thoroughly enjoyable read.
The Marsh King's Daughter is a fast-paced thriller that builds suspense throughout the book to a resounding crescendo at the ending. It is a story of a sociopathic Native American man who kidnaps a 14 year old girl and takes her to a remote, run-down cabin surrounded by a swamp in the Wilderness of the Upper Pennisula, Michigan. The story is about their child, Helena, born to the kidnapped victim when she was 16 years old. Helena's father teaches her survival skills as she grows up unaware of her circumstances. She Is unaware they were captives until they were not when Helena was 12 and her mother was 28. Helena is later faced with conflicting thoughts when her father escapes from a maximum security prison and kills 2 correctional officers. She is faced with the reality of protecting her husband and their two daughters who know nothing about her past. I thought Helena's story was heartbreaking, but she is unbelievably strong, courageous and skilled in ways of the Upper Pennisula Wilderness. It is beautifully written and very difficult to put down after you begin reading.
Loved this book. I was intrigued not only by the plot but also the detail about the marsh and how one would live in such a place. There is no doubt that Helena loves her father even through the harshest of times. She knows no other way to live except the way of the marsh and under the heavy hand of her father. The father himself is also quite complex. He is a horrid man, but the way Dionne develops him the reader sees glints of deep love for his daughter. Dionne does a remarkable job handling the fragile balance between Helena and her father as well as her mother. I believe the tracking game daughter and father play throughout the story holds the true key to their relationship. Karen Dionne transported me to the marsh of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan with the magic of her words and description. Don't miss this one. Once you read the first line, you'll be hooked.

This story will stay with me for the rest of my life. One of the most original, gripping, beautiful stories that I have read. Fast paced, thrilling, original with characters and descriptions that jump off the page. Well, done Ms Dionne, well done.
