A book that kept me involved from beginning to end and made me look at my own journey in a more thoughtful manner. With no holds barred and both the good and bad brought into the light, Dorothy's grandkids and other readers are left with a long list of experiences to contemplate. If I had grandchildren, this is exactly the kind of book I would like to write for them.
This book was a joy to read . I love life stories and this was happy, joyful, sad and poignant . I highly recommend this book to anyone .
Dorothy Kennedy brings her life to life in these pages. What a beautiful story of growing up in the mid west, sisterhood, family, catastrophic depression and recovery, great love and loss. Whether or not her grandchildren want it, I'm so glad she wrote this beautiful memoir.
I truly enjoyed this story. I was given a copy of this book by the author herself. I see and visit her often, but I must say that even if I did not know Mrs. Kennedy, if I found this book and began reading it, I would still finish it. This is a true story of a woman born before her time, surviving through hardships however finally finding her happy ending. I only wish I had been able to meet Mr. Will Kennedy in person.
Dorothy Kennedy's memoir displays a highly developed grasp of the English language and ability to use it with clarity and precision. Kennedy takes the reader on a journey through her lifetime of enjoyable experiences and unexpected adversities. She writes with a gentle humor of her loves and joys, yet she also describes life's cruel turns and reflects on them unblinkingly. Her grandkids should hold this book dear, but it speaks meaningfully to a far larger audience.
To me real life beats fiction every time. This memoir is such a lovely read from beginning to end. I related to so many of the author's early childhood memories and it was a treat to bring me back to those days. However, the best chapters came from the journey through bad times to the development of the author's determined steady growth in a career difficult to accomplish in her time. We see her change from a beaten psyche to a strong, mentally healthy and important contributor to the future of education. Character development at its best -- and real. I recommend the book as the perfect summer read beautifully composed with so many good stories inevitably manipulating memories of your own along the way. You'll enjoy the journey!
