This novel is very well written, the characters are fleshed out and alive, but the romance itself was terrible. I cannot believe in the couple's HEA when during most of the book (MORE than 70%) the hero was determined to marry another woman, despite the attraction and love he felt for the heroine. In fact, he keeps thinking to himself that he has to ask the other woman to marry him because she is off his class, and even gets engaged to her despite his feelings for the heroine. The other woman breaks off the engagement, had she not the hero would have married her. How can I believe the Hero and heroine would ever get lasting happiness when the whole book he has been intend and actively pursuing another woman? The synopsis of the book is incredibly misleading as the hero did NOT pursue the heroine but was content on flirting, kissing and making love to hear while waiting to see if the other woman would renew her engagement to him. This is the worst book I have read by Mary Balogh and I am now afraid of purchasing more of her books mostly because the synopsis was such a lie. The end of the synopsis reads: "Joseph is determined to make Claudia his at any cost—even if that means breaking every rule for a love that is everything he has ever wanted.…"
And it is the reason why I bought this novel. Had I known the hero was willing to marry the other woman almost up until the last page, only asking the heroine to be his when the other woman left him for another man, well I wouldnt have bought this terrible novel.

Simply Perfect Mary Balogh 9780385338240 Books Reviews

I`m not sure whether to recommend that you read all the other books in the Simply-series AND the books in the Slightly-series, not to mention A Summer to Remember (Get Connected Romances) and One Night for Love or not.

You really can`t enjoy this book if you haven`t at least read a few of those books because it seems all the main characters from the other books are in Simply Perfect and you are expected to know about them from the previous books because Mary Balogh offers no explanations about details that are thrown into the story.

On the other hand I would recommend that you read none of the other books because then you`ll just realize how much this book is a copy of so many other of Mary Balogh`s books. I`ve been reading a few lately - especially the Simply-series - and I`ve liked/loved most of them. But while reading Simply Perfect I realized how much especially the more physical scenes are alike from book to book. The hero and the heroine take a walk, they lay down on his jacket, they have sex with their clothes on and where she does not seem to enjoy herself, then he offers marriage if there is "consequences". Later they have sex again under different circumstances and she enjoys it more. Even the opening of the flap on his trousers are alike from book to book.

The general storyline is also much the same from book to book, it seems. The characters are different but the storyline is alike.

I truly wish I hadn`t read all these books right after each other because Mary Balogh can write very good stories. But now I`ve had enough with the copying of storylines and scenes from one book to the next and I need to take a Mary Balogh break.

I wish I could recommend that you read Simply Perfect as a stand alone, but I don`t think it`s possible to do just that.
SIMPLY PERFECT is the final book in the Simply series. It is the story of Claudia Martin, headmistress of the girls school central to the series. Claudia is in her mid 30s and satisfied with her life. She meets Joseph Fawcitt, Marquees of Attinghorough when he arrives with a message from one of her friends and an offer to escort her and two of her students to London. Claudia is inclined to dislike the aristocratic Joseph, but soon he shows her that is not not a superficial man. While the two cannot even think about a romance because of the difference in their social classes, but they soon are sharing their inner lives. The two fall in love, but there are many external obstacles to overcome before they can be happy together.

I really enjoyed the romance between the two. It was mature befitting the ages of the protagonists. I really liked Claudia, who is strong and independent but still caring. I really liked Joseph even though I was really annoyed by his engagement. I did manage to understand that he was evolving himself -- moving from a man completely enmeshed in society's rules to one who tosses off the rules to acknowledge love in his life. The book overall was a little uneven to me, but I ultimately liked it based on the strength of the love story.

I also was happy that secrets that have existed since the early Bedwyn books were finally revealed. It was also nice to get a look a the happy marriages of favorite characters from past books.

I'd rate this a 4.25.
Beautiful story of a severe, prim and proper owner of a girls’ school in Bath, who reluctantly accepts a handsome, charming marquess’ offer of a ride into London. Two of her pupils are ready to take on employment, and Claudia, our h, has been successful enough that she can tell her man of business that the school’s anonymous benefactor can cease his generosity on their behalf.
Claudia hates the aristocracy, and is, in general, independent to the point of aloofness. Joseph, the Marquess and our H, is warm, cheerful and easygoing. Somehow this unlikely pair is thrown together over and over, to the delight of some and the horror and disgust of others in their circle.
There’s a lot to learn about Claudia and Joseph, a lot for them to sort out on the way to their HEA. It makes for a great read, and a true “feel good” story.
